The Butler Firm was founded by Clay Butler in September of 2008. Originally the firm was a general practice focusing on civil litigation and general counsel services for local businesses. The law firm’s client base rapidly grew over the next couple years. The growth and success of the law firm in the early stages had a lot to do with the core principles Clay brought to the table which were attention to detail, hard work and client responsiveness.
In 2010, the attorneys and staff at The Butler Firm began discussions related to addressing the long term goals of the firm. Each of the attorneys shared a common passion for Renewable Energy, so as a natural result, a determination was made to take a leap of faith and change the entire practice. Immediately, the firm as a whole began focusing on acquiring and servicing clean technology and renewable energy companies.
Since The Butler Firm made the decision to transition its practice, renewable energy has become an integral part of the law firm’s culture. Not a day goes by where the staff and attorneys are not enthusiastically talking about a renewable energy topic. Everyone at the firm is passionate about renewable energy and they truly enjoy practicing renewable energy law. Some of the firm’s members are admittedly technology geeks, so coming into work has even become an enjoyable process.
Striving to be the best in this legal field the firm also developed an extensive internal legal education plan. Every month each attorney must write two articles on a topic related to legal issues in the renewable energy industry. By writing these in-depth articles the attorneys are able to stay abreast of legal issues the firm’s clients are facing as well as develop the ability to quickly identify solutions to unique or complex legal problems. The support staff, who are a vital asset of the firm, also participate in the education plan and must spend at least one hour of their work day dedicated to studying renewable energy law. In addition to self-education, a speaker who is an expert in their field is brought in-house at least once a month to to educate the attorneys and staff in a round table setting.
The Butler Firm still services some of its original clients because of the strong relationships that were formed. The heart of the firm, however, strongly lies with renewable energy. As such, the firm gives back what it receives and proudly supports and sponsors local organizations in Austin and San Antonio who are dedicated to the renewable energy cause. As the renewable energy sector grows, and becomes an everyday part of everyone’s lives, The Butler Firm and its team are extremely proud to say they played a little part in helping make the world we live in a cleaner place.
